March 2021.

In celebration of International Women’s Day 2021, Managing Director and General Manager for Globeleq South Africa, Dhesen Moodley, has put a call out to his team and the renewable energy sector in South Africa, to remember the role of women in history, society, families and business.

“As the world celebrates International Women’s Day 2021 this month, under the theme #ChoosetoChallenge, I’d like to remind my colleagues and broader industry sector to seek out opportunities to encourage and support gender diversity,” said Moodley.

Moodley voiced his respect and gratitude to the women that have always played a strong role in encouraging his curiosity and learning journey. During his career, he has had the opportunity to mentor female investment professionals and promote space for women to be listened to more actively at investment committees and portfolio company boards.

“The Renewable Energy industry is a fresh sector that is unconstrained by outdated thinking about the roles that women can play, as technical specialists or business leaders, which gives us a head-start on other industries to drive the gender diversity agenda,” added Moodley.

This forward thinking is reflected in the Globeleq Scholarship Fund programme, which has allocated almost 70% of its R14m budget to support young women in South Africa studying engineering, education, agriculture and nursing.

“Similarly, the Globeleq Internship Fund has spent R17m providing 73 graduates with their first job in the energy industry, of which 28 were women.

“These initiatives will accelerate the talent pool of women influencing the energy transition, which is we are committed to,’ concluded Moodley.
