April 2020

A collaboration of Eastern Cape coastal wind farms operating in the Kouga municipality area, better known as the Coastal-6, have banned together to respond to the urgent and escalating needs of stranded communities, who are struggling during the country’s COVID-19 lockdown period.

A 20 foot refrigeration container was purchased and transported to the Kouga Municipality, and set up at the Humansdorp Fire station Covid-19 Joint Operations Control to be used as the central collection, storage and distribution point for the Kouga Municipal Food Parcel and fresh food items.

To have a dedicated, secure, sterile, temperature controlled container to maintain the freshness of perishable food items has proven to be of high value and essential in the Coastal 6 wind farms and the Municipalities coordinated efforts to limit the spread of Covid-19 virus and provide emergency and lifeline food relief to the most vulnerable families in disadvantaged communities and human settlements.

Food parcels and fresh food items are delivered by the Kouga Municipality to the elderly and other vulnerable groups such as disabled person’s families, pregnant moms with babies and no income, orphans, chronic medication patient, among other.

In a coordinated effort, essential lifeline food items and hygiene such as sanitary soap for washing hands to limit the spread of the Covid-19 virus, enable a family of 4 to 6 people to survive a week to 10 days.

The programme has been a co-ordinated effort by the Coastal 6 wind farms, the Kouga Municipality, SASSA, private NGO’s and other organisations, to ensure that efforts are not duplicated so that the largest number of vulnerable families are supplied with lifeline the food parcels. The Coastal-6 wind farms include: Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm; Kouga Wind Farm; Metrowind Van Stadens Wind Farm; Oyster Bay Wind Farm; and Gibson Bay Wind Farm.
